According to a new report, North Carolina is home to one of the nation’s top destinations for millennials.

The town of Cary recently ranked No. 7 on a list of cities gaining residents ages 25 to 39, according to SmartAsset research published in March of 2021.

Cary wasn’t the only spot to rank, as North Carolina overall was named the sixth-most popular state for moving millennials. Looking at research, it seems as though more than 8,700 moved to the Old North State in 2019.

SmartAsset studied U.S. census data for all states and compared across 180 large cities. The figures date back to 2019, the most recent year with available information. For each location, the number of millennials who moved from or left for another state determined the trends.

As research has it, younger adults are rushing to Cary. The city had a net migration of 3,364 millennials from out of state in 2019, which is a 9.41% jump. This was the highest percentage jump in the entire study.

Home to roughly 170,000 people, Cary offers everything this population group is seeking. Affordable homes, mild winters, and larger floorplans in light of the pandemic. Millennials are leaving bigger cities, landing frequently in the West and South.

But North Carolina cities aren’t just attracting millennials, results show.

In February, another SmartAsset study ranked Charlotte and Cary among the top U.S. cities where retirees are moving. In the most recent SmartAsset report, Raleigh was the only other North Carolina destination to earn a top 25 spot, landing at No. 13.

Cary is home to plenty of outdoor parks, mouth-watering restaurants, great schools for those with children, and lots of open jobs with convenience to Research Triangle Park, major highways, and proximity to the airport.
