It’s no secret that North Carolina is a highly desirable state to live in. Both Atlantic Ocean beaches and Appalachian Mountains lie within several hours of each other, along with it being the home to three major professional sports teams. The state’s capital of Raleigh encompasses Research Triangle Park, which continues to draw hundreds of employers and employees to the area each year.
Because of this, it would make sense for the nation’s top home builders to want to construct new houses in North Carolina. In fact, out of the nation’s top 10 builders, nine have already secured their roots in the Old North State. Only four other states join North Carolina in that ranking, totaling a list of only five states that can claim they have the best builders.
In a study done by Professional Builder Magazine, builders throughout the United States were ranked based on 2016 revenue. Out of the top 10, Tri Pointe Homes Inc. was the only builder to not have homes in North Carolina at the moment. Here’s the list along with some info about each builder and their reputable image.

D.R. Horton – The industry giant has consistently ranked as the #1 home builder by Builder Magazine since 2002 due to the number of people that consistently choose to build their home with D.R. Horton. Building both townhomes and single family homes in the Triangle, you’ll be sure to find something you like. Their philosophy is to create value every step of the way during the construction process, forming quality relationships with their clients. In the Triangle, you can head to Southerlyn or Bryson Village to see some of the builder’s work.
Lennar – With a well-known national name, Lennar is known for building in some of the most popular cities throughout the United States. The company caters to all different types of people, no matter what stage of life they are in. In North Carolina, Lennar currently has communities both throughout the Triangle and Charlotte-metro areas.
PulteGroup – Bringing in more than $5 billion dollars in home sales in 2016, Pulte Group diversifies themselves across the top 50 metro markets in order to support a range of buyer groups. Many of their homes are built being up to 30% more energy efficient than others, and have earned many more awards along the way in the home building market.

With wall-to-wall coverage and design centers that will let you personalize down to the very last detail, it’s easy to see why a home buyer would choose CalAtlantic.
If you love the idea of being close to a downtown area without the big city feel, then you’ll want to head to Apex to see Salem Village. Located close to the quaint downtown area of Apex, you’ll find a community feel while still being close to all the action.
NVR Inc. – NVR, Inc. operates as a home building unit and builds under Ryan Homes, NVHomes, and Heartland Homes. The three builders combined to build homes in 14 states throughout the nation, with North Carolina being one of those.
Toll Brothers – Since 1967, Toll Brothers has been building luxurious new home communities nationwide. In a FORTUNE Magazine 2016 survey, the company was named as #6 worldwide in the Quality of Products/Serviced Offered. Their architectural design has won the Toll Brothers several awards, and they focus on placing premium products throughout all of their neighborhoods.
At Hasentree in Wake Forest, you’ll find a country club community that has both a golf course and a 16,000 square-foot community clubhouse that hosts many activities throughout the year. The Toll Brothers pulled out all the strings with Hasentree, making sure to include an aquatic complex, six tennis courts, and a fitness center for convenience.
Taylor Morrison – Previously named as one of “America’s Most Trusted Home Builders”, Taylor Morrison attempts to build personal relationships with their clients. With more than 100 years of home building experience, the housing giant closed on 6,311 homes in 2015.
KB Home – Setting the standards high in the building industry, KB Home has made it a goal of theirs to aim for greatness when it comes to using dependable building materials and executing a building process that requires a series of checkpoints and inspections. Originally started as a company that focused on building new homes for Korean War veterans, KB Home has spread to seven states as well as the Metro D.C. area. They are the only home builder to have received the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year–Sustained Excellence Award every year from 2011-2016.
Parks at Bass Lake is a community of new homes in Holly Springs that are within walking distance of both Bass Lake and local parks for plenty of entertainment. Also, the new Holly Springs Towne Center is located only minutes away for a quick trip to the store.
Meritage Homes – With greener homes expect to be even more prevalent in 2017, Meritage Homes has made it one of their main focuses to build homes that are quieter, cleaner, and healthier for you. With plenty of established communities already all over the Triangle area, Meritage is quickly expanding. Be on the lookout for McKenzie Ridge in the heart of Apex in the upcoming months.
TRI Pointe Homes, Inc. – This home builder is the only one out of the top 10 who doesn’t have homes in North Carolina at the moment. That’s because the company soley builds in Northern and Southern California and Colorado. In 2015, the company grossed more than $2 billion in salesm and closed on 4,057 homes.
